Fire Fatalities (Part 2) “Planning the Investigation”

The investigating officer must consider a number of things prior to beginning a fatality fire investigation.  It is critical to the investigation that ample time is afforded to the “pre-planning” process to insure that the investigation is conducted in a timely and efficient manner.

Over the years I have found that the first and foremost task that should be completed upon arrival to a fire scene, especially one that involves a fatality, is “Pre-planning”.  Once the scene is secure and access controlled, this simple step allows the lead investigator the “time” he or she needs to collect their thoughts and conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation.

Taking a little time up front to plan things out will be be of great benefit to you and your team as you proceed through the investigation.
